baroque – modern – cosmopolitan
The Schlosstheater (Castle Theatre) in Celle is Europe’s oldest baroque theatre with a resident company.
The productions at the Castle Theatre range from the classics to works by contemporary playwrights, from comedies to modern topical plays, from musical theatre to ambitious children’s theatre, from devised plays to plays produced with children and young adults – it’s the variety of genres and topics that makes the Castle Theatre’s programme exceptional.
Each year more than 20 productions are presented in four unique venues: the baroque Castle theatre with 300 seats, two studio theatres, and the HALLE 19, a flexible, modern space for innovative theatre at the site of the former Cambridge Dragoons Barracks in Celle. In addition every year during the summer months one play is being presented in the castle’s courtyard – a romantic site and a unique experience. The theatre’s own remarkable company, its high-quality workshops and latest technology ensure high artistic standards, which attract artists from across the country.
In the 2016/17 theatre season the Schlosstheater presents famous titles such as the Dreigroschenoper ( The Threepenny Opera) and Die Physiker (The Physicists) as well as devised plays about the 500th anniversary of the Reformation and the town of Celle’s 725th anniversary.
Special highlights every year are a play for the whole family, which traditionally premieres a few weeks before Christmas, and the summer theatre play in the Castle’s courtyard. The latter also is being played in August, when Celle and the surrounding heathland are particularly beautiful.
