Eschede

Twenty villages, small, romantic and charming – each in their own way unique – form the joint municipality of Eschede. This area with its 6,300 residents belongs to one of the most sparsely populated regions in Germany.
Much of the traditional character of the ancient cultural landscape around Eschede has been preserved.
Large agricultural half-timbered farms nestling under oak trees have long defined the image of the South Heath.
Today most people still make their living from agriculture, forestry and fish-pond farming. Through its century-old culture and traditions the Heath has many images.
Belonging to these are not only the rural cultural life typical for this region and the famous poet of the Heath, Hermann Löns, well-known far beyond the area, but also experimental art. The writer Arno Schmidt for example has in Eschede’s neighbouring Heath village of Bargfeld entered literary history.
The cultural initiative “Randlage Eschede” has made our community famous among art lovers even outside Germany with its “Heide(n)spektakel”. All around Eschede, people are rediscovering regional history.
Cultural and common roots have helped people to preserve their identity, especially nowadays when life is changing so rapidly. “Magic sites” mark the change. These are pieces of land art connected to past or forthcoming events. On the way to the “Magic sites” where stones begin to speak and trees begin to whisper, the stories come alive.
It’s all about abandoned places and sand covered postal routes, but also about wars over pigs and forgotten hunting lodges. It is worthwhile retracing the past.
