The fascinating World of Bees

The Bee Institute was founded at Celle in 1927 in order to promote beekeeping, the decline of which went hand in hand with the shrinking of the nearby heathlands. Today the Bee Institute is known as the LAVES Institute for Apiculture, Celle.

Today, the institute counts among its tasks the education and training of apiarists and beekeepers, a nationwide advisory service, plus many various research and development tasks (studies of chemical and organic honey, bee pathology, research of cross-pollination and nectar, the ecological importance of both honey and wild bees and bee breeding).

Worth seeing is the "Imkereiwesen" presentation (about beekeeping) in the stairwell from 1607 and throughout  parts of the former orangery building dating from 1677. This can only be viewed as part of a guided tour.
