The ‚Model Estate‘

The Georgsgarten or ‘St. George Garden’ housing estate, demonstrates Otto Haesler's optimum use of floorspace, evident in the creation of affordable living space combined with a high level of comfort. His standardised floor plans and the focus on function earned Georgsgarten the nickname “the model settlement”.

Otto Haesler completed the estate during 1925-1926.  It was his second housing project in Celle in the ‚New Building‘ style.

The Georgsgarten estate also had to be affordable for the poorer sectors of society. The apartments did not have individual bathrooms, but there was a shared wash house. Despite the enormous focus on the efficient and optimum use of space, there was still comfort: the estate had a café, a library, leased gardens to promote self-sufficiency, shops and a kindergarten, all of which still exist today.
